# What is llms.txt, and does your ecommerce site need it?

> llms.txt is a Markdown file, proposed in 2024, that summarises a site's key pages for AI tools; it isn't an official standard. Google says the file neither helps nor hurts visibility in Search or AI Overviews. For an ecommerce site it isn't required. It's a low-cost, optional extra you can add once the basics are in place.

## What is llms.txt, and does an ecommerce site need one?

llms.txt is a text file placed at your site's root that summarises your most important pages for AI tools in Markdown. It's not an official web standard; it's a format proposed in 2024. Google says plainly that Search and AI Overviews don't use it. For an ecommerce site it's optional: a low-cost extra, not a requirement.

Over the past year plenty of claims did the rounds along the lines of "without llms.txt you won't show up in ChatGPT". The reality is duller. The file does no harm and is easy to set up, but it changes nothing for your Google visibility, and how other AI tools use it is unclear. This post separates what's confirmed from what's guesswork.

## Where did llms.txt come from?

Jeremy Howard proposed the format on llmstxt.org in September 2024. The page itself describes it as a proposal open to community input; no standards body has adopted it. The idea is simple: language models struggle to read complex HTML, so the site owner offers a clean map of the most important content.

## What does an llms.txt file look like?

The file is Markdown and, per the llmstxt.org proposal, has these parts:

1. **H1 heading:** the site or brand name. This is the only required section.
2. **Blockquote:** a short summary of what the site does.
3. **Detail paragraphs:** optional extra context.
4. **H2 sections with link lists:** one Markdown link per line, with an optional short note.
5. **An "Optional" section:** secondary links that can be skipped.

For an ecommerce site, a sensible structure is the brand name, a one-line description, then links to your key pages under headings like "Categories", "Shipping and returns", "FAQ" and "Guides".

## Does Google use llms.txt?

No. Google Search Central's guide to generative AI features, published in May 2026, says you don't need new machine-readable files, AI text files or Markdown to appear in Google Search, because Google Search doesn't use them. The same guide says keeping an llms.txt for other services is fine, but it will neither help nor hurt your visibility in Google Search.

This isn't a new position either. According to a July 2025 Search Engine Land report, Google's Gary Illyes said Google doesn't support llms.txt and isn't planning to.

So if you want to show up in AI Overviews or AI Mode, the work isn't in llms.txt. It's in crawlable, well-structured pages that answer the question clearly.

## Why does Chrome Lighthouse check llms.txt?

This is where people get confused. Lighthouse has an llms.txt audit in its Agentic Browsing category. According to Chrome for Developers, the audit checks whether requesting the file causes a server error. If the file doesn't exist and the server returns a 404, the audit is marked not applicable, because the file is currently optional.

That isn't a Google Search ranking signal. It's about how AI agents running in the browser read a site. The practical takeaway: if you add the file, make sure it responds properly; if you don't, a clean 404 is fine.

## Do ChatGPT, Perplexity and other tools read llms.txt?

We couldn't find a clear official statement. Some site owners have shared server logs showing AI crawlers requesting the file, but a request doesn't mean the content is used in answers. The honest answer: it might be used, the evidence is thin and the effect hasn't been measured.

Stronger signals for visibility in ChatGPT and Perplexity are robots.txt settings that let crawlers in, fast server-rendered pages, content that answers questions directly and mentions of your brand on other sites. We cover these in our [guide to getting cited in ChatGPT and Perplexity](/en/blog/geo-guide-chatgpt-perplexity).

## What does an example ecommerce llms.txt look like?

Here's a short draft for a fictional home textiles brand. Swap the links for your own pages and keep it short; the goal isn't to list every page, but to show where the answers to the most common questions live.

    # Example Home Textiles

    > An ecommerce brand selling cotton bedding, towels and blankets. Ships across Turkey.

    ## Categories
    - [Bedding sets](https://example.com/bedding): Single and double, with size charts
    - [Towels](https://example.com/towels): With weight and material details

    ## Shopping info
    - [Shipping and delivery](https://example.com/shipping): Delivery times and free shipping rules
    - [Returns and exchanges](https://example.com/returns): Withdrawal rights and return steps
    - [FAQ](https://example.com/faq)

    ## Optional
    - [Blog](https://example.com/blog): Care and buying guides

Once it's live, open it in a browser to check it shows as plain text and the server returns a 200. Update it when your category structure changes; an llms.txt full of dead links is worse than none.

## What are the pros and cons of adding llms.txt?

| Topic | Status | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Google Search and AI Overviews | No effect | Google's guide says the file isn't used |
| Official standard | No | Still a proposal on llmstxt.org |
| Setup cost | Low | One Markdown file |
| Maintenance | Needed | Update when categories and pages change |
| Other AI tools | Unclear | No official statement on usage |
| Lighthouse audit | Shouldn't error | A 404 is fine if there's no file |

The biggest risk isn't the file itself; it's the time it steals from more important work. If your product pages are missing shipping, returns or sizing info, start there.

## Should you add llms.txt to your ecommerce site?

Our take: if your SEO and tracking basics are in place, add it as a one-hour job and keep expectations low. We publish an llms.txt on Performetic's own site and our publishing flow updates it automatically, but we don't count on it for traffic. On platforms like Shopify, ikas or Ticimax, placing a file at the root may need an app or a theme edit.

If you add one, don't list every product page. List the pages that answer the most common questions: category pages, size guide, shipping and returns policy, FAQ and your best-performing guides. Keep prices and stock out of it; they go stale fast.

## What actually helps you show up in AI search?

Short list: crawlers like Googlebot can reach your pages, product pages carry structured data, content answers the question in the first paragraph, product information is current and consistent, and trusted sites mention your brand. Performetic's [ecommerce SEO and GEO service](/en/services/seo) starts with these basics. If you'd like to see where your site stands in AI search, request a [free growth audit](/en/contact).

## Key takeaways

- llms.txt is a Markdown file, proposed in 2024, that summarises key pages for AI tools; it isn't an official standard.
- Google says llms.txt neither helps nor hurts visibility in Search and AI Overviews.
- The Lighthouse llms.txt audit only checks for server errors; a 404 is fine if you have no file.
- There's no official, measured data on how other AI tools use the file.
- If you add one, do it with low expectations; the real work is crawlable pages that answer clearly.

## FAQ

### Does llms.txt help SEO?

Not for Google Search. Google Search Central's guide to generative AI features says llms.txt will neither help nor hurt your visibility or rankings in Google Search. For AI Overviews and AI Mode too, what counts is crawlable pages that answer the question clearly, not an extra file at the root of your site.

### Where do you put an llms.txt file?

Under the llmstxt.org proposal, the file is published at the site root, at yourdomain.com/llms.txt. It's Markdown and starts with an H1 heading. On hosted platforms such as Shopify, ikas or Ticimax, adding a file at the root may need an app, a theme edit or the platform's redirect feature.

### What's the difference between llms.txt and robots.txt?

robots.txt is an established standard that tells crawlers which pages they may or may not crawl, and search engines follow it. llms.txt sets no access rules; it only offers a summary and link list of important content. One is a permissions file, the other is a content map, and llms.txt doesn't replace robots.txt.

### Will I be invisible in ChatGPT without llms.txt?

There's no evidence of that. Neither ChatGPT nor Perplexity has said officially how they use llms.txt in answers. What matters more for visibility is that crawlers can reach your site, pages are fast and readable, content answers questions clearly and other trusted sites mention your brand.
