How to set up Meta Advantage+ sales campaigns

In short

An Advantage+ sales campaign is a Sales objective setup that hands budget, audience and placement decisions to Meta's AI. It counts as Advantage+ while campaign budget, Advantage+ audience and Advantage+ placements stay on. It is the strongest starting point for ecommerce accounts with reliable Pixel and Conversions API data, varied creative and steady weekly purchase volume.

What is a Meta Advantage+ sales campaign, and when should you use it?

An Advantage+ sales campaign is a campaign using the Sales objective that leaves budget, audience and placement decisions to Meta's AI. If your tracking is reliable, you get purchases every week and you have enough creative made from different angles, it is the first setup an ecommerce brand should try. If your measurement is weak or you sell to a very narrow market, manual control is safer.

Meta describes Advantage+ sales campaigns as the most efficient way for advertisers using the Sales objective to drive online sales, and says advertisers who used them saw a 9% improvement in cost per conversion on average. That is an average, not a promise for your account, so this guide covers both how to set one up and when it does not work. (This campaign type was previously known as Advantage+ shopping campaigns, or ASC.)

How is an Advantage+ sales campaign different from a manual campaign?

Advantage+ used to be a separate campaign type. Today, when you pick the Sales, App promotion or Leads objective in Ads Manager, the setup already starts with Advantage+ on. So "an Advantage+ campaign" is now less a campaign type and more a state that exists while three key settings stay on.

Setting Advantage+ on Manual (Advantage+ off)
Budget Campaign budget (one or more ad sets) Ad set budgets across multiple ad sets
Audience Your inputs are used as suggestions Audience is narrowed with hard limits
Placements Advantage+ placements One or more placements excluded
Optimization System distributes by opportunity More control, less flexibility

According to Meta, if you narrow your budget, audience or placements too far, you will see "Advantage+ off" in that section and you no longer benefit from all of the AI optimizations. Manual features are still available; you just need to know which choice switches what off.

Which choices switch Advantage+ off?

Meta's Help Center is specific about this:

  • Budget: Advantage+ stays on if you use campaign budget (with one or more ad sets) and if you use optional spending limits. It switches off if your campaign has multiple ad sets and does not use campaign budget.
  • Audience: It stays on when you give age, gender or custom audiences as suggestions. It usually switches off if you use "Further limit the reach of your ads" and untick "Use as a suggestion". Raising the minimum age up to 25 or excluding a custom audience does not switch it off.
  • Placements: Excluding placements in any ad set, or opting out of mobile or desktop devices, switches Advantage+ off.

If you do exclude placements, the "Allow limited spend to excluded placements" option lets Meta spend up to 5% of your budget on each excluded placement when that is likely to improve performance.

How do you set up an Advantage+ sales campaign step by step?

Check two prerequisites first: your Meta Pixel must send the purchase event with the correct value, and ideally the Conversions API sends data from your server as well. Connecting your first-party marketing data to Meta's delivery system is the first item on Meta's own best-practice list. We cover that foundation in our server-side tracking guide.

  1. Create a new campaign in Ads Manager and choose the Sales objective. You will see Advantage+ switched on in the top right.
  2. Choose your budget strategy. Select campaign budget (Advantage+ campaign budget) and enter a daily or lifetime budget.
  3. Set audience controls. Under Controls, add only the limits that are genuine business rules, such as location, minimum age and language. If you only ship within one country, location is a control.
  4. Optionally add suggestions. You can add custom audiences such as your customer list or site visitors as suggestions. The system uses them as a starting hint and goes beyond them when it helps.
  5. Keep Advantage+ placements on. Do not exclude placements unless you have a hard reason such as brand safety.
  6. Upload your creative. Add varied creative with different angles, formats and messages rather than one image. Meta also lists diverse creative assets among its best practices.
  7. Check the campaign score before publishing. In eligible accounts, the campaign score and recommendations on the right show what your setup is missing.

How do you control spend on existing customers?

The question ecommerce brands ask most: "Is Advantage+ spending my budget on people who already bought?" Advantage+ sales campaigns used to have an "existing customer budget cap". Meta says that setting is no longer available, but you can achieve the same result manually:

  • To spend nothing on existing customers: choose campaign budget and add your existing customer list as a custom audience exclusion in the audience controls.
  • To split the budget: use campaign budget with two ad sets. The first targets existing customers and is capped with an ad set spending limit; the second uses the same creative and excludes existing customers to reach new people.

For reporting, you can define "audience segments" in your ad account settings. Meta then breaks down sales campaign results into new audience, engaged audience and existing customers. Set this up on day one so you can see which segment actually drives growth.

When does an Advantage+ sales campaign not work?

Advantage+ is not the right answer for every account. Be careful when:

  • Tracking is weak. If purchases arrive incomplete or with wrong values, the system learns from the wrong people. Fix measurement first.
  • Purchase volume is very low. Accounts with very few weekly sales learn slowly. Check your budget with the method in our Meta ads budget guide.
  • You cannot produce creative. An Advantage+ campaign running a single creative gives the system little to test, and fatigue arrives sooner.
  • You have genuinely strict business rules. For age-restricted products or regions you cannot deliver to, use account controls at ad account level. Meta says account controls do not affect a campaign's Advantage+ state.

Example: deciding on a setup

Example: a skincare brand gets steady weekly purchases, has the Pixel and Conversions API in place and owns 12 different videos and images. A sensible start is one Advantage+ sales campaign, a control excluding existing customers, and audience segment reporting. If the same brand started with only two images, it would need to fix creative production first.

How should you test an Advantage+ campaign?

Do not switch off your existing manual structure overnight. Run the Advantage+ campaign over the same period as your current campaigns and judge results at campaign level, not ad set level. Use the A/B test tool in Ads Manager where you can. Do not decide based on the first few days of swings; wait for the learning phase to finish. Even when Advantage+ wins, it can still make sense to keep separate, smaller campaigns for specific jobs such as retargeting or a product launch.

Key takeaways

  • An Advantage+ sales campaign is a Sales objective setup where campaign budget, Advantage+ audience and Advantage+ placements stay on.
  • Using ad set budgets across multiple ad sets, unticking "Use as a suggestion" or excluding placements switches Advantage+ off.
  • The existing customer budget cap is gone; recreate it with custom audience exclusions and spending limits.
  • Reliable measurement, enough purchase volume and varied creative are prerequisites.
  • Read results at campaign level and with audience segments.

Frequently asked questions

Are Advantage+ sales campaigns the same as Advantage+ shopping campaigns?

Yes, Advantage+ shopping campaigns (ASC) are now called Advantage+ sales campaigns. The difference is that you no longer pick a separate campaign type. When you choose the Sales objective, setup starts with Advantage+ on, and narrowing budget, audience or placement settings switches it off.

Can I choose an audience in an Advantage+ campaign?

Yes. Controls such as location, minimum age and language are hard limits. Age, gender, interests or custom audiences are added as suggestions, and the system can go beyond them when it expects better performance. Excluding existing customers does not switch Advantage+ off.

Do Advantage+ sales campaigns work with a small budget?

They can, but results depend on purchase volume. Ad sets usually exit the learning phase after about 50 results in the week after their last significant edit. If your budget cannot support that, keep everything in one campaign and one ad set instead of splitting the budget.

Should Advantage+ replace my manual campaigns?

Not overnight. Run the Advantage+ campaign alongside your current structure, compare results at campaign level and ideally with an A/B test. If your tracking and creative are strong, shift budget gradually towards whichever setup wins.
